What happens when you cannot be who you once were, when the life you have built no longer fits, when you must let go of something or someone to remain true to yourself?
These are the questions and life lessons I have been quietly, and then not so quietly, pursuing for the better part of the past decade. I have reinvented myself multiple times; each pivot, each reinvention, each new version of me was born out of absolute necessity and yet the process of letting go of what was and making room for someone else entirely is anything but easy and at times excruciatingly hard.
I never imagined giving up my corporate career to stay home with my kids, the same way I never imagined closing my business in the midst of the pandemic, but when one identity no longer fit, when who I was no longer felt like me, when my dream no longer felt necessary, I was forced to figure it out, again and again and again. Each reinvention brought me to my knees, forcing me to be honest with myself about who I was and what I needed to simply survive.
I believe being a mother requires being honest with ourselves about which needs can be met through motherhood and which needs must be met through the continued development of self, and yet the process of reconnecting and rediscovering ourselves while simultaneously showing up for our careers and for our kids doesn’t always come easily.
I have made it my mission to help other women navigate these in-betweens, normalizing the ups and the downs mothers face, making sense of the often messy and not exactly perfect paths we take to reclaim and reinvent ourselves in the midst of motherhood. While this new lens isn’t exactly new, as I have found myself skirting these very topics, these very issues for years, it has taken a lot to finally accept what my life, what my story has been trying to tell me all along.
If you have ever reinvented yourself or if you are currently in the process of reinventing yourself, I would love to connect with you for a future project I am working on. Simply hit reply!
